Why today?   Today is Friday: the most glorious day of the week. I woke up at 8:30, sat in bed cooing at pictures of adorable baby zoo animals   and laughing at a bizarre article about the craziest items seized by the TSA   until 9, then walked into the kitchen and sat talking with friends for a while (THANK YOU TO XIAOYUE 15 FOR MAKING US ALL BREAKFAST 3 YOU ARE A SUPERSTAR). At 9:30, I realized it was 9:30, and leapt up to get my act together. Showered, dressed, brushed teeth booked it out the door at 9:50, and made it to Astrophysics at 10:03. Our exam started at 10:05. Whoops. At 10, my friend Eric had texted me saying Annaaaaaaa, presumably because he was worried that Id fallen back asleep (a totally reasonable concern). So much for waking up well ahead of time. I felt and continue to feel good about the exam. There was a calculation I didnt quite have time for at the end, but Im confident that my method and formulas were right, sowhatever.   At 11am, I emerged from the classroom with Eric; we walked and talked for a while, which was a nice transition from AHHHHH, WORK! mode into ahhhh. break. mode. Now Im back in French House, celebrating the beginning of my week off by (finally) blogging about a trip I took a month ago. Sorry for the delay this sort of slipped through the narrative cracks. In mid-February, I boarded a bus from MIT to the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. With me were ~25 other MIT students (undergraduates and grad students), Professor Lowell Lindgren of the MIT music department, and Sam Magee, who runs the program that brings us all together. We are Arts Scholars. We take MIT-funded excursions to plays, operas, concerts, museums, special exhibitions. We get special tours, have dinner with directors and performers and artists, and bring along MIT professors and experts to guide our experience.   We can take discounted (or free!) classes at the Student Art Association, that otherwise cost well over a hundred dollars. My most recent adventure with the Arts Scholars was in the name of opera:  Carmen Saturday evening at the MET in NYC, and Powder Her Face  at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Like any good visiting artsy group, our first stop upon arrival was a special exhibition at the MoMA: On the way in, Kandinsky tells the visitor what to think about. Im a little rusty on my art history, but I was very excited to see the Kandinsky. I was less excited to see red squares on white canvas, purple diamonds on white canvas, and green circles on white canvas, but one has to be mentally prepared for that when visiting a modern art museum. We took a tour of the exhibition, then had some time to ourselves. A few of us made a beeline for the Van Gogh and the Andy Warhol You may recognize the lovely lady on the right. And presumably you recognize the one on the left, too. After the MoMA, we dropped our things off at the hotel and ate a SPECTACULAR Italian dinner. I was thrilled (and relieved) to see the tiramasu, because I was fading but still had a 3-hour opera to sit through. Some food pictures, courtesy of Linh V. 13: om nom nom. After dinner, we walked to the MET. I was nervous; I hadnt seen an opera in about a decade. My last (only? not sure) opera experience was   in fifth or sixth grade; the London Symphony Orchestra had a Magic Flute family performance. I got to go onstage at the end, and play my trumpet with the orchestra. Ten years later, I prayed that I would be able to appreciate Carmen without the promise of joining the orchestra at the end. There was nothing to worry about. Turns out that Carmen is one of the most accessible operas (The Arts Scholars went to see Wagners Ring Cycle last year, which I hear was less successful.) I walked around singing Toréador  and Habanera  for a week. Think hard before you decide to look them up; they will not leave your head for a long time. Duh-dum, dum, dum. I was astonished that none of the singers had microphones. The MET is BIG and the performers voices filled the space. It put to shame all the musicals Ive been to, where voices are amplified, and belt out of speakers instead of the performers mouth. I chatted with Professor Lindgren afterwards (hes seen many, many Carmens, and I wanted some context) he said that it was one of the better performances hes seen. I feel very lucky. Georges Bizet wrote Carmen  in 1875; he died later that year, ignorant to its imminent success. 120 years later, a 24-year-old composer named Thomas  Adès composed his first opera: Powder Her Face,about a 1950s sex scandal in England. We saw it at the BAM the morning after seeing Carmen. The director was Jay Scheib,  who also happens to be the Director of Theater Arts at MIT. I enjoyed it a lot less than Carmen. Powder Her Face  is also about a very bold, coquettish woman, but could really not be more different from Carmen, both in design and in performance. A couple of Arts Scholars actually skipped it, because of  how risqué it was reported to be and at one point there were over two dozen naked men wandering around and doing handstands on stage, to symbolize the duchess various affairs. In principle, I dont have anything against putting two dozen naked men on stage, as long as it contributes to the production but the scene dragged on  way longer than was actually necessary to make its point. I decided not to use my binoculars. That said, the opera got rave reviews all over the place (the New York Times, The Classical Review, Backstage, to name a few of many) so maybe Im just unsophisticated and dont know what Im talking about. Anyway, following Powder Her Face, we boarded the bus back to MIT. I spent the three-ish hours LaTeXing 8.04 (Quantum Physics I) lecture notes for MIT OpenCourseWare, and collapsed into bed the moment I got back to French House. The next day, there were no classes, which saved my butt I hear that its not classy to pset through opera performances, so I was very behind. And the Arts Scholars are nothing if not classy. The main character I chose to analyze is Abigail Williams. Abigail is a very intelligent, manipulative, and cunning character in The Crucible. Some would call her the puppet master of the play, as she almost seems to have all of the other characters on a string, controlling their destiny with her sly and devious ways. A main example of this in the play, was her use of Mary Warrens poppet to manipulate and control Elizabeth Proctors fate. A poppet is somewhat of a voodoo doll, which Mary Warren had innocently created, and left in the Proctor household. Abigail saw this as opportunity to finally destroy Elizabeth once and for all, after having an affair with her husband John, and still wanting to get him back. The only way to do this, was to kill Elizabeth. Abigail stabbed herself in the abdomen with a large needle, and cried witchcraft at Elizabeth, insinuating that Elizabeth had been the one to stab her through witchcraft. The courts fell for her ingenious plan, and Elizabeth was innocently sent off to jail. This is only one example of the scheming ways of Abigail, shown throughout the play. Her main motivating factor has a theme of jealousy and revenge on Elizabeth. She is clearly the â€Å"villain† of the play with her deceitful ways, and never shows any remorse for her actions. She is also a large example of irony in the play, as she is the one that was first accused of witchcraft, but ends up successfully blaming everybody else. The one she dreamed of had a great big yard, trees and 'grass growing without a fence'. She did not want to abandon where she came from, but she knew she wanted to be free of everything that life on Mango Street brought. They will not know I have gone away to come back. For the ones I have left behind. She is committed to her roots on Mango Street. We witness Esperanza blossoming from a innocent, shy girl to one who witnesses much, but all of this makes her strong and clear about her desires for her life. Basketball Junkie by Chris Herren and Bill Reynolds Essay

The book â€Å"basketball Junkie† is a Fantastic book it really is. This book is about a hometown high school superstar named Chris Herron on his journey from Fall River Massachusetts all the way to the Boston garden. Chris lived the dream of every kid who has ever bounced a basketball in their drive way. His accomplishments I believe is what really dragged me into the story. Just the fact that he wasn’t just an ordinary junkie from the streets that wrote a memoir. He was a basketball player that made it to the pros. I feel that gave it the edge just being up there compared to the best players such as Allen Iverson Jermaine o Neil and Kobe Bryant. Basketball Junkie was truly was an interesting story. Chris put it all out there. Herren talks about his substance abuse in brutally honest detail. He describes how his drug addictions caused him his basketball career and almost his life. How his NBA trip was short live as he spent more time chasing his next drug buy then working on his jump shot. Chasing what started out as Alcohol then to coke then to oxy cotton then to heroin caused his NBA career to fizzle out. How I related to the story was basically the same the story was told expect from another view. I witnessed a great basketball not as big as Chris Herren but good enough to get his name out there and play college basketball. This kid was great just like Chris a good person with many thing ahead in his life. Toward the end of his senior year I don’t know what you would call it. But I would say going down the wrong hanging with wrong crowd. That when he made the same mistake Chris made when he started. One thing lead to another just like Chris said in the book trying it once opened doors to other drugs. Unfortunately neither this kid nor Chris was able to close these doors. This was upsetting to watch so I could just imagine for a big superstar like this one. What there brothers were going through and the people who watched and taught Chris how to play. His coaches and people that helped Chris build up to this must have been so heartbroken. This story was really deep because you can tell that he wasn’t very appreciative of his life and accomplishments. He tells his nightmare on no matter what was going on he would always have to put his addiction first because the drug made him feel as if he couldn’t function otherwise. He also talks about his all-time low but I will let you figure out what that is in the book. This really made me feel bad for him. He wanted to be better but he couldn’t. Chris herren were stuck in a decade long nightmare of addiction. That ruined him causing him to get seven felonies and to overdose four times in his life time. One time his addiction actually leaving him dead for thirty seconds long. Overall I really enjoyed â€Å"Basketball Junkie†. I felt like in really brought me inside the life of a junkie addicted to drugs. He really put it out there. He gave his inside thoughts and feeling and how he needs drugs to function. Chris Herren saying this meant a lot even he was this big time basketball player in rolling stone, sport illustrator and all that. He still manages to get caught up in this lifestyle. â€Å"Basketball Junkie† inspired me to never take any chances for granted and to never let bad influences to get in between my future.
